This database is an attempt to gather information about the DExH/D protein family with particular emphasis on the biochemical and functional characteristics of these proteins. Because DExH/D proteins are essential in numerous fundamental biological processes, research concernig these proteins is conducted in various disciplines such as biochemistry, genetics and biophysics. Therefore, available information is growing fast and, due to quantity and variety of new data, it is difficult to maintain a comprehensive overview of the field. The purpose of the DExH/D protein family database is to compile available information and to make it readily accessible on the WWW. Information about each DExH/D protein/gene that has been subject to at least one publication is compiled on a datasheet: a WWW page with tabulated properties, annotations, references, and links to other databases. For the DExH/D proteins of some selected organisms where only the gene sequence is known, there are pages with links to other databases. You can search the database by selecting a protein by name. A comprehensive description of the database can be found in the following paper:
Please cite this article when the DExH/D protein database assists in published research. Since the DExH/D protein family is already fairly large and keeps on growing, there will be lots of gaps in the information provided. Therefore, I greatly appreciate all feedback concerning new results, errors, and omissions as well as suggestions to improve the database.
IMPORTANT Many links to external sources will appear in an "infowindow", i.e. in a second browser window. The first time you open a link to an external page this "infowindow" pops up. The back button on this "infowindow" browser will not work to get back to the other window. If you leave the "infowindow" open (basically, it was designed for that reason) all subsequent external links will load into this "infowindow"; if you close the "infowindow", a new "infowindow" pops up the next time you follow an external link. Different platforms (e.g. Windows, Mac, or IRIX) and different browsers (e.g. Netscape or IE) handle this "infowindow" differently. It always pops into the foreground with Netscape on Mac and IRIX systems but it stays in the background on Windows with Netscape and IE. Anyway, you'll figure it out... |
